Thuya Neutralizer Cream is Step 2 of the Thuya Professional lamination system. After Step 1 has made the hair flexible by reducing disulfide bonds, Step 2 begins the oxidation and stabilization phase — helping the hair establish its new structure and maintain the desired direction and shape.
How Does Neutralizer Cream Work?
After Step 1 — Permanent Gel has reduced part of the disulfide bonds within the hair and made the structure flexible enough to reshape, the chemical process needs to be properly stabilized.
Thuya Neutralizer Cream contains Hydrogen Peroxide, an oxidizing agent that helps stop the reducing action of Step 1 and promotes the reformation of disulfide bonds.
This oxidation stage is what helps stabilize the hair in its newly arranged position.
Why Is Step 2 Acidic?
Thuya Neutralizer Cream has an acidic pH of approximately 2.5.
Following the alkaline environment created during Step 1, the acidic formulation helps move the hair back toward a lower pH environment while the oxidation process takes place.
The change in pH also affects the physical behavior of the hair fiber and contributes to the transition from the restructuring stage toward stabilization.
However, Step 2 should not be described simply as “closing the cuticle.” Hair chemistry is more complex than an open/closed cuticle model — its primary role in the lamination process is oxidation and stabilization following reduction.
Why Hydrogen Peroxide?
The Thuya Neutralizer Cream uses Hydrogen Peroxide as its oxidizing agent.
In a thioglycolate-based restructuring system, oxidation is necessary after the reducing stage to help reform the bonds that contribute to the hair’s structural stability.
Correct use of Step 2 is therefore essential for achieving a controlled and predictable chemical restructuring process.
